RING POP CLAY RINGS

Why just eat your Ring Pop when you can craft your Ring Pop and eat it too?! Let your imagination run wild and create a beautiful gemstone ring or even a whimsical golden fairy snail (see the pics at the end of the post). These upcycled creations are the perfect accessory for any budding fashionista or dress-up diva. Need some jewelry for a Halloween costume or school play? Model Magic and Ring Pops will come to your rescue! Even the youngest artist can craft an in vogue accessory with this simple tutorial. And this is a great introduction to clay, as model magic is very forgiving. Don’t just settle for just a tasty treat when you can take your Ring Pop to the next level with this fun DIY project!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

LET’S CREATE!

1. The first step is definitely the favorite in my house…eat a Ring Pop! Once you are done, wash the plastic base with a little soap and water.

2. Pull off a chunk of Model Magic, depending on the size you’d like the “stone”. We like ours to mostly cover the Ring pop ring base, so we usually make ours about the size of a small bouncy ball. If it’s too big, pull some clay off and start again. If it’s too small, squish some more clay into it and start rolling again.

3. Roll your clay into a ball and squish down onto the spike on the base, being careful not to press the clay so hard you expose the end of the spike. You’re shape will flatten out a bit in this process, but don’t worry! You can continue to work with the clay to get it in the shape you want. You really can get super creative here and make ANYTHING you can dream up.

4. Now that the centerpiece is done, we want to add some detail. You can do this by adding “snakes” of clay to frame your stone. I’ve shown you below how to make a simple twist by twisting two snakes together to make it a bit fancier. You can also flatten out the snake so it’s more like a flat ribbon. Or add little balls all around the border. Look at some fancy ring designs to get some ideas if you need some inspiration.

5. Find a safe place for them to dry for about 48 hours. (I know…this is the hardest part for us tooo!)

6. Whew! We did it…they are dry! So now we get to paint! You can choose to paint your rings any color you’d like, but I will let ya in on a little secret…gold or silver paint definitely goes a loooong way into making these rings look fancy and realistic.

7. After you paint your stone, add a few coats of gold or silver paint to the clay details and borders. You can also add gem stickers, like faux pearls now.

Tip for painting realistic looking stones

If you are trying to make your clay look like a real stone, the most important part is to match the color. For example if you are making an amethyst, you would use different shades of purple. Or for turquoise, you would use different shades of blue and green. Paint the whole “stone” your base color (like teal for turquoise.) After your base coat is dry, add little swipes and dots of a darker teal and use your finger or a q-tip to blend the paint. Do the same with a lighter shade of the same color. This really adds texture and dimension to your stone. We also add a few swipes of gold to add even more drama.

8. Add 1-2 coats of DuraClear gloss varnish to give it that extra shine and protect the paint from chipping off.

7. Let dry and wear your new costume rings with pride!

This craft is one that can’t be missed for all the future fashion designers or anyone who likes to play dress-up! They are sooo easy to make and the possibilities are endless. We’ve made jewelry for a Frida costume, a poop ring (for Max, of course! LOL), fairy rings, and just about everything else you can think of. I promise once you make one, your kiddo’s jewelry box will quickly fill up with all kinds of fantastic creations! My absolute favorite one has to be fairy snail that Mighty designed! Kids really will blow your mind if you get out of their way and just let them create. Do you think your little one would enjoy designing their own jewelry? Drop us a comment below and let us know!

Check out Mighty’s adorable golden fairy snail ring! We just added some glittery paper wings and some toothpicks for antennae.
