EGG CARTON HAMMERHEAD SHARK – Upcycled Craft for Kids
Have you ever been at brunch and seen the discarded egg cartons and champagne corks and thought to yourself, “OOH! That looks like hammerhead shark!” No?…just me? LOL To be fair, I did have sharks on the brain. Max has been shark-obsessed lately, which means lots of shark book, shark facts, shark songs and, of course, lots of asking if I could make him a hammerhead shark craft. Therefore, the Egg Carton Hammerhead Shark was born!
Honestly, this upcycled Egg Carton Hammerhead Shark turned out even better than I imagined. Not only is it adorable…it also held up to Max using it as an ACTUAL hammer! There aren’t many things that can withstand Max’s enthusiasm, so this was a win! I handled the assembly, but Max did all the painting & customized his shark with some sparkly blue gems! Even his sister got in on the shark action. We ended up making a whole school of ’em. Who knows, maybe we discovered a new species – the Brunch Hammerhead? Or the Mimosa Shark? Either way, your kiddo will love making their very own. Grab some glue and get ready for some fun with your little ones. Trust me, it’ll be FIN-tastic!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- egg carton (2 cones and some scraps)
- googly eyes
- 2 champagne corks
- super glue
- scissors
- paint & paintbrush
LET’S CREATE!
1. Cut the pieces you need out of your egg carton. You will need 2 cones (as shown below), one slightly smaller than the other. Cut 2 side fins, 2 dorsal fins (one large and one small), and a tail shape. You can also cut these shapes out of cardboard or cardstock. You are basically making 4 triangle shapes..1 large for the main top fin, 2 same size for the side fins and one baby triangle for the top fin next to the tail. The best way I can describe the tail shape is like a really wonky, pointy heart.
2. Place a line of glue around the rim of the smaller cone and push it into the larger cone to make a diamond shape. This will be the shark’s body.
3. Superglue the flat ends of your champagne corks together. This creates the head.
4. Superglue your head onto the body as shown below. You can also use hot-glue, but super glue seemed to work the best on the cork to make it nice and sturdy.
5. Bend the bottom of your fins slightly and glue the side fins to the side of the body. Do the same with your top fins.
6. Make a tiny cut in the top and bottom of the egg carton cone. Place some glue on the end of the tail and slide it into the slit you made.
7. Your hammerhead is assembled! Now it’s time for paint.
8. Add details. You can paint them on, use markers, or even add some fun gem stickers. Don’t forget to add a sweet smile on the bottom of the face too!
9. Glue googly eyes on the sides of the corks to finish up your masterpiece. And if googly eyes aren’t your thing, you can also just paint the eyes on.
10. Stand back and admire your crafting skills!
Easy-peasy! We saved a bit of trash from the landfill and hopefully put a smile on your littles’ faces, because this seriously has to be the sweetest shark in the ocean, right? I mean, look at that smile! Throw these happy hammerheads into a sensory bin filled with blue rice for an easy ocean themed set-up or glue them onto a piece of blue paper for a shark-tacular piece of artwork!
