ALICE IN WONDERLAND INSPIRED TEA CUPS

Are you ready to brew up some creativity? Well, get those pinkies up and prepare to sip some fun! We have the perfect accessory for anyone who loves tea time – colorful, eco-friendly tea cups made from reused applesauce containers. Transform into a princess with these charming cups or let your little one play host as they serve up delicious drinks to their stuffed animal guests – everyone is invited! So let’s get to work crafting up some elaborate tea cups approved by The Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Alice themselves!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • empty applesauce or fruit container
  • old jar lid
  • paint ( We love using DecoArt ready-to-pour paint for this, but any acrylic paint will work)
  • hot glue gun
  • pipe cleaners
  • gem stickers (optional)
  • headband if wanting to make Alice-in Wonderland inspired hat (see end of post)

LET’S CREATE!

1. Paint the INSIDE of the plastic cups. We used ready-to-pour paint that is normally used for paint pouring because is it more fluid and really coats the cup. Acrylic craft paint also works, but you may need more than one coat. Paint your jar lids to match. They will become the cup’s saucer.

2. After all the paint is dry, decorate the outside of the cup by adding stickers or painting on details with puff paint. This is the part my kiddos love the best! (And as you can see, sometimes they skip the painting paint altogether so they can get straight to the stickers! Lol

3. Make your handle; twist 2 pipe cleaners together and cut down to 5 inches. Bend it into a S shape.

4. Glue the handles on. (This part is best done by an adult.) Using the hot glue gun, place a dab of glue on the end of the pipe cleaner’s S shape. Hold it on the top part of the cup until dry, then do the same with the other end. (The picture below describes it waaay better than I seem to be able to with words! Lol)

5. If you are just making some awesome teacups for playtime, then CONGRATULATIONS- you are done! Add a bit of imagination and enjoy your tea party! If you came here to make an adorable teacup hat, then keep following along.

6. For a teacup hat, we need at least 2 teacups, so follow steps 1-5 to create another teacup.

7. Once your teacups are complete, glue the teacup to it’s saucer. Be careful not to melt the plastic. (I have my kids decorate their teacups and do all the gluing/assembling of the headband for them.)

8. Stack and glue your teacups at an angle.Use a LOT of glue. Then glue your teacup stack to the headband at an angle.

All the gluing with the hot glue gun can get a little fiddly, but it is definitely the best glue for this project. And when you see the final product, it is totally worth it! No one is going to believe this was made from recycled stuff!
